When I was in the USA ,I met the wonderful Brenda Manuelito in Arizona. We shared about transgenerational Trauma and historical Trauma and our similar works in using Storytelling as a tool to assist communities in healing work.I have added the web link in the side bar under digital storytelling , please go and have a look at the site and the stories that she is making with her new partner in this project and co creator – Carmella Rodriguez.Together and with the rest of their team they have developed and grown in leaps and bounds working with the passion of assisting healing through stories ” one community at a time “. This is a passion we share and have met and spoken of in Hawaii and hopefully one day we will do some work together as well. Meanwhile , please have a look and see some of the stories. I have included an excerpt here from the site and a listing of some of the collaborators they have shared with .

This is from the website :

nDigiDreams, LLC is taking digital storytelling to rural and underserved indigenous communities across the United States. Each new media seed they plant is taking on a life of its own. With the Creator’s assistance, their technical assistance and relationship building efforts, and with enormous interest from numerous native community members and collaborators, new offshoots are beginning to take root and grow very rapidly. Hundreds of native individuals are tapping into their ancient knowledge and practices and becoming new nDigiStorytellers.

I decided to arrive early so I could adjust to the jet lag and of course spend time in the beautiful city of Paris . On hearing that I would also be in Paris for a few days the wonderful people here that I had met last year during a conference in Canberra with AIATSIS Invited and organised for me to present the ideas behind the community engagement projects I have done using Digital storytelling and my reseach. Of course this was also a wonderful chance to share about the work of Pelican Expeditions( see previous links and posts ) and specifically the work with the Hopevale community on Cape york. I shared the history and aboout how the project that we created there with using the digital stories developed and also spoke about some of the wider ideas and issues impacting Aboriginal and Torres Strait people’s in Australia. I also shared about the projects developing that focus on creating ways to build community and the work of linking science and Indigenous knowledges into living curriculumn , something that Natalie Davey one of the Pelican founders , has worked very hard on in the past few years to bring ” old – ways and NeW ways ” Together and a link a number of us share as a vision.

Galerie Michel - presentation

Anyway , here are some pictures of my first 48 hours in Paris , more to come soon.

I listened today to a wonderful talk by Brene Brown called the Power of vulnerability on YouTube. One of the things she said that stood out for me is that “stories are data with a soul “, brilliant ! Her talk focuses on the purpose and meaning of lives being about the importance of connection . The research she did showed that the main quality needed for connection is vulnerability . vulnerability is the ” willingness to say I love you first , the willingness to be with things the way they are , the willingness to take risks ” ( from talk on you tube ). What she described as being the one main thing that was the only variable between people who felt worthy and those who did not , was the ability to BELIEVE we are worthy. Shame is the experience of fearing disconnection , for being rejected once we are seen and being vulnerable requires of us to be seen , to risk being seen . This is very resonant for me in the research I am doing , as resilience is linked to this , the strong sense of love and belonging is to do with relationships as a central starting point for our healing and recovery. Anyway , go have a listen to the talk and see what you think. Thanks Natalie for passing it on to me.

The following is taken from the ABC RADIO NATIONAL WEBSITE , SEE LINKS IN SIDE BAR :

The National Recording Project for Indigenous Performance in Australia
In the early 1990s, the Australian band Yothu Yindi, with its distinctive blend of global popular styles and indigenous traditions from remote Arnhem Land, rose to national prominence with hit songs such as Treaty and Djapana – songs that would become part of Australia’s cultural fabric. In this program, ethnomusicologist Aaron Corn and the band’s main singer and songwriter Mandawuy Yunupingu take us through the ideas and events behind some of Yothu Yindi’s best known songs. Together they locate the band within a continuum of traditional practice that records the beauty of Arnhem Land as experienced by Mandawuy’s ancestors, and which has guided local engagements with visitors from across the Arafura Sea for centuries.

Yothu Yindi stood as an icon of the Aboriginal Reconciliation movement at a time when Australia’s legal and political institutions were starting to recognise their past injustices against Indigenous Australians and the continuing native title over the lands they inhabited. The band met with international acclaim and, in 1992, Mandawuy Yunupingu was named Australian of the Year. But how well do we know Yothu Yindi and its songs? Or the culture, history and politics of the remote tropical region in Australia’s Northern Territory that shaped its musicians and their music?

Aaron Corn is ARC Future Fellow and Associate Professor of Ethnomusicology at the ANU School of Music and a founder of the National Recording Project for Indigenous Performance in Australia. He is also the author of the book Reflections and voices: exploring the music of Yothu Yindi with Mandawuy Yunupingu. With commentary from Aaron Corn, Mandawuy Yunupingu, Marcia Langton and Galarrwuy Yunupingu, as well as evocative location sound from Arnhem Land, this program reveals how Yothu Yindi helped inspire a generation to rethink Australia’s relationship with its first peoples.

From the University of ARIZONA -

On May 9, Arizona State University (ASU) posted a video of Leroy Little Bear, a member of the Blood Tribe of the Blackfoot Confederacy (Canada), delivering the Spring 2011 Simon Ortiz and Labriola Center Lecture on Indigenous Land, Culture and Community. He is the head of the SEED Graduate Institute, and a former director of the American Indian Program at Harvard University.

He discussed how the thinking process is controlled by language. “If I were to say in English dynamics without motion, you would immediately think that’s an inherent contradiction. Well we were talking to a Haida Indian from Queen Charlotte Islands and we were asking him about dynamics without motion. He thought about it for a while but then he comes back and he says ‘well that’s easy to explain. … go out on the ocean in a canoe and when you’re far enough away from the land or you can’t see the land and use it as a reference point you know you’re canoe is moving because you’re rowing it but 360 degrees around you, you’re always the same distance from the horizon, that’s dynamics without motion.’”

Little Bear said Native languages can explain things that are considered paradoxes.

The program was opened by Simon Ortiz, a poet, writer and ASU professor, who introduced Little Bear.

The lecture was recorded March 24, 2011 at the Heard Museum in Phoenix, Arizona.
Created by participants – Ann Maree Reeves and Grace Bargholz during one day out on Port Phillip Bay.
As part of the City of Kingston supported two days Caring for Sea Country- Marine Science and Traditional Knowledge project.
For more info-
TWO BAYS
Port Phillip Bay and Western Port support a range of important ecosystems and habitats, a diversity of animals and plants, and provide many benefits to Victorians including a wide variety of water-based recreational activities. The health of our bays is dependant on the way in which we use and manage our catchments.
The Two Bays Project has been running annually since 2007. It is a citizen science and community engagement program that provides management agencies an opportunity to engage coastal communities in better understanding of the values of their local bays and the links between catchment-based activities and the health of the bays.
The Two Bays program typically consist of:
• Bay Conversations — a networking opportunity for waterway and bay managers and stewards
• Marine research
• Citizen Science Days
• Aboriginal Traditional knowledge and sea country stories
• Marine Magic – sharing images of marine from Port Phillip and Westernport Bays
• Promoting awareness of bay issues and current initiatives through technology and media
PARTNERS: Two Bays has been developed primarily by Pelican Expeditions in partnership with Parks Victoria. Each year we seek to engage and involve other agencies, community groups, scoientists and individuals who manage and care for our Bays.
KEY MESSAGES: We can all (community, industry and government) take actions to protect the health of our Two Bays

• Our Two Bays are unique living environments — a healthy future depends on us all working together now.
• Our Two Bays have many important natural and cultural values.
• There are strong links between the health of our catchments and the health of the Two Bays.

Digital Storytelling on Pelican
Digital storytelling is a practice being used worldwide to encourage people to make and tell their own stories. Digital story telling has been a part of Pelican Expedition’s projects since 2007. It has been used as a way to document the experiences, knowledge and stories told by educators, Aboriginal Elders, scientists and the participants as they journey on Sea Country.
The digital storytelling team consists of Samia Goudie, Natalie Davey and Aurora Davey. You can read and see more about these stories on
